Buona sera-the night crawls on the back
of a venetian sunset,
slivers of blue passing into black,
white stars shattering the sky;
a blow to the heart
like the patter of rain
in the green-tinged canals.
looking out
over the rooftops--
the hum of life
vibrates against the terracotta shingles
narrow streets pushing the sound
up, up, the murmur of laughter
and clanking forks
echoing from the sidewalk
of a trattoria--
but high above this,
i wait on our balcony,
the city pouring forth
like wine from a carafe.
the lights of piazza s. marco
are bright enough only
for me to see your face,
half in shadow,
and to see that you are smiling.
a better city for lovers
has yet to exist.
this city, this square,
this little band playing
"satin doll"-- all this
was made for you and i.
you smile; i hide behind
eight red and white roses.
here, i am always your girl.
venice keeps gliding by, like
an empty gondola in deserted canals.
